FINAL PROJECT

PLANNING

For my master artwork piece I wanted to create a mug. I saw a lot of people making art inspired mugs but I wanted to create something different, so I did some research and found a mug style I thought would be perfect.

A museum mug was a great concept because it was different, a challenge and difficult. Painting master art work was going to be a challenge, and the gold glaze is one i've never used.

BUILDING

I started off with a brand new clay, Bravo Buff. It is a mid fire clay, so I can use the gold glaze on it. It took me three tries to complete a basic pinch pot. Once I did, I created three small coils and scored and slipped them onto the mug and pressed them into different shapes for the frames. Then I added a handle by using a large coil and slipping and scoring it to the mug and smoothing it into shape.

STARTING OVER

My final mug came out in one piece, till I picked it up and one of the frames fell off, which is a good note for the future, bravo buff needs lots of slipping and scoring, more then any other clay I have previously used. Since I had noticed that the slipping and scoring was a possible issue, I made a back up project.

ARCH OF NATURE MORTE, VAS AUX MARGUERITIES ET COQUELICOTS

I started with 6-12, because Bravo Buff is horrible. I rolled out a small slab, with a half inch thickness. I then cut a large rectangle out of it and 2 coils, one long and the other short. I slipped and scored the pieces together and blended them.

sold in 2014 at Sotheby's New York ago for the sum of $55 million.

I picked this piece because its my favorite of Van Gogh's. I love the detail on the vase and the noticeable brush strokes, it has so much personality and depth.

The present work was painted at Dr.Gachet's house and probably came into his possession upon completion.

FINAL

I used under glaze to create the vase, then from there, used a light green underglaze for the background and front edges. I added a vine of flowers on the rim as well. I used the mid fire glaze in snow ball for the sides and foot, and not back since in the kiln it would be faced on that side.

Due to the lateness, as well as its a mid-fire I wont see the true out come until after the break.

I learned many things in this project but the biggest thing is that Bravo Buff is NOT a good hand building clay, in fact its awful.
